Puerto Rico is in a state of crisis. In the wake of Hurricane Maria, mass flooding and destruction have put the island’s entire population at risk. Men, women, and children have been living without electricity, without access to clean drinking water, and rebuilding will be a tremendously difficult undertaking. Now YOU can help!

We here at RTR Pilates are helping by collecting batteries and water filters for our friends in Puerto Rico. Starting Monday, November 6th through November 20th, all five RTR Pilates locations in Chevy Chase, MD, Palisades, DC, Potomac, MD, McLean, VA and Highlands Ranch, CO will have collection boxes. Next time you come to class please bring your new, unused and unopened batteries and brita filters to help our neighbors. Yoga vs. Pilates // by Lindsey Crane

yoga vs pilates
Are you looking at your schedule and trying to decide weather to book a Yoga or a Pilates class during your busy week? Have you ever wondered how Yoga and Pilates compare? How are they similar? How are they different? If you’re like me; I assumed that Pilates was just like Yoga and that because I didn’t really connect with Yoga, I wouldn’t like Pilates either. I happily admit that I couldn’t have been more wrong!

Yoga and Pilates are both low-impact workouts that focus on using bodyweight resistance. Both Pilates and Yoga workouts can increase overall health, leading to a better quality of life and the benefits from consistently practicing either Yoga or Pilates are vast.

It’s good to know where each practice started. Yoga started over 5,000 years ago in India and was created as a part of a larger philosophy and a way of life. Yoga was created to promote a better understanding of oneself, and the connection between mind, body, and spirit.

Pilates started in the early 20th century as a rehabilitation practice for World War I soldiers and really took off as professional dancers started using Pilates to increase their dancing performances.

Yoga and Pilates are alike because they both include movements and postures intended to increase your mind-body connection, strength and flexibility. Yoga is a practice focused on your mind and how you feel and the strength and flexibility is a side effect of a well-balanced yoga practice. Pilates is a practice focused on toning the body and improving your postural alignment, balancing muscles and improving your functionality of movement through core body strength.

STRENGTH TRAINING
When deciding which practice is for you, ask yourself how important increasing strength is to you. Unlike yoga, reformer Pilates includes the use of resistance with weight bearing springs that make it more similar to weight training than yoga is. Yoga and Pilates both use poses for toning the abdominal muscles. However, Pilates exercises are more intense and results may be achieved much quicker than they might be if practicing yoga. Through frequent Pilates exercises, a flatter and firmer stomach can be achieved.

HEART HEALTH
Yoga: Hatha yoga provides little cardio benefit; power yoga does a little bit better, giving the heart the same aerobic workout as a quick paced walk.

Pilates: You will feel the burn with moves like “the hundred,” and “planks”.  A beginner routine offers only a mild aerobic workout, to be compared to a slow stroll. An advanced class is better, picking the heart rate up and burning more calories. A Circuit class with the jump board is by far the most intense of the cardio workouts offered at RTR Pilates known to burn anywhere from 300-450 calories in 55 minutes!

WEIGHT LOSS
Both yoga and pilates are wonderful for toning and strengthening through a full body workout, but when it comes to Pilates vs Yoga weight loss advantages, there is not a massive difference in how much weight you will lose. If you are trying to lose weight, you could try Pilates classes using different Pilates machines which add the cardio and fitness element to your Pilates poses and will help you to burn additional calories.

In conclusion, the easiest way do decide between Pilates and Yoga is to go out and try both! Try classes of each, making sure to try a couple different yoga practices and mat pilates, chair pilates and reformer pilates! Only you will know which practice suits your needs and abilities. At the end of the day both Pilates and Yoga are very effective ways to strengthen your muscles, get in better shape, relieve stress and gain more flexibility!

5 Things To Do Before Taking Your First RTR Pilates Class // by Molly Solebello

So you’ve scheduled your first RTR Pilates class—now what?! Here are 5 helpful tips to “know before you go” to make sure you have the best experience possible:

1.) Read our FAQ page: The FAQ page contains helpful information such as our cancellation policies, No Show policies, and class levels. We strongly recommend all clients start out in a Level 1 Class to ensure you get the attention you need and avoid any injury. It’s also the best way to learn our contemporary approach to reformer Pilates!

2.) Arrive to the studio 5-10 minutes prior to the start time of class. Our classes start on the 15 minute mark of every hour, so arriving between :05-:10 will allow you to observe the end of the class before yours and give you time to talk to the instructor between classes.

3.) Make sure you have grip socks! We require all clients to wear socks with grip on the bottom for safety and hygiene. We carry Toe-Sox and Tavi Noir grip socks, which are available to purchase via our self-service retail kiosks located at each studio.

4.) Let the instructor know it’s your first class and inform them of any injuries you may have. Getting to the studio 5-10 minutes early will allow ample time for you to meet the instructor, have them show you the Allegro II Reformer we use, and discuss any injuries you may have. Informing the instructor of injuries allows them to provide modifications for you throughout class to make it more enjoyable!

5.) Have an open mind and be ready to work hard! We are a contemporary, group reformer Pilates studio. Our Pilates classes are designed to make you work muscles you didn’t know you had in a choreographed 55 minute flow around the Allegro II reformer. Each instructor approaches class differently, and no two classes are ever the same. We challenge our clients to get in touch with the mind-body connection of classical Pilates while making it fun and energetic!

Any questions? Don’t hesitate to give us a call at (301) 983-3745 or email us at info@RTRpilates.com!

Which Athletes Cross Train with Pilates // by Lindsey Crane

Screen Shot 2017-07-13 at 1.24.36 PM

In a departure from the "that's just for girls" mentality, the Pilates method has become popular among professional athletes looking for an edge and a way to cross train their bodies. The Washington Redskins and the Pittsburgh Steelers have both incorporated Pilates exercises into their training regimens. Like yoga, Pilates can improve flexibility, balance and strength. Unlike yoga, Pilates focuses mostly on strengthening the core and postural muscles.

Chicago Bears
tight end Martellus Bennett, enjoys Pilates as often as he can.

For Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown, Pilates is an integral part of his training routine. Brown said that this whole-body approach, including the feet, has helped him become more "elusive." In other words, the exercises have benefited his overall balance control, and "knowing how to get my feet where [I want] to go."

Missy Franklin is a swimmer with multiple world records under her belt. In the 2012 London Olympics, she earned a total of 5 medals of which 4 were gold, and 1 was bronze.

Pilates is great for core building, and it is what helps her to be a stronger swimmer with stronger balance and body awareness. She sincerely believes that it is her Pilates work outside the pool that helps her dominate in the water.

Which Celebrities Practice Pilates? // by Lindsey Crane

Screen Shot 2017-07-13 at 12.13.49 PM

Who practices Pilates? An easier question might be, who doesn’t practice Pilates? Like many Hollywood starlets and a growing population of professional athletes, Pilates is for everyone! The reformer Pilates workout challenges your core and helps you to become longer, leaner, and overall more toned. Keeping with a regular Pilates regimen will get you sculpted abs, and a super sexy camera-ready figure. For this reason, and many more, celebrities are turning to the Pilates workout to get them in shape for celebrity events and movie roles.

Celebrities who LOVE Pilates:

Amanda Seyfried - Harley Pasternak, celebrity trainer, may be Amanda's weekday workout, but the actress told Self Magazine that Pilates is her go-to on the weekend for "stretching and toning and being long and lean."

Anna Faris - When Anna hooked up with LA Pilates instructor Nicole Stuart, she thought she was the last woman in Hollywood to discover the workout! On Pilates itself, Anna told InStyle Magazine that “it completely changed her body.”

Cameron Diaz - Cameron's longtime trainer Teddy Bass says that Cameron uses a mixture of Pilates, cardio, and weight training to stay in shape: "That seems to be the best combination for women over 30," he explains. "Women need weight — it's great for building the butt. And elongation and smallness is tapped by doing Pilates." When it comes to Pilates, Cameron does a combination of mat work and reformer Pilates as well.

Mandy Moore - For Mandy, Pilates is as much of a workout as it is a way to keep her happy. The actress told Women's Health that she does Pilates three to four times a week and that it's one of the ways she achieves balance, good health, and happiness.

Megan Fox - During a red-carpet interview for the Golden Globe awards, Megan told E!'s Giuliana Rancic that she stays fit by doing a lot of Pilates — "an immense amount of Pilates" to be exact.
