Form, Function & Fun Workshop: Saturday, Feb. 9th! // By Eden Ellis

A little form….a little function….a LOT of fun!

In class, a couple weeks ago, we were discussing topics for workshops that clients would like to see RTR Pilates offer.  I was a little surprised and very excited that a few clients wanted to have the opportunity to work on their Pilates form.

Have you been in a class lately and wondered if you had the form right? Did you feel any of the feelings the instructor mentioned? Did you wish that you could have a few more reps to know? Are you getting the results you expected or do you feel like a few places are feeling bigger…not smaller? Were you wishing you could get a little one-on-one time with the instructor, but didn’t want to hold the class up?

Let’s spend about an hour learning more about where your bones go and how your muscles naturally follow.  Bring 2-3 moves and we will focus on the Pilates fundamentals behind the move.

Join me, Eden Ellis, on Saturday, February 9th at 4pm at our Palisades location. Click HERE to sign up now and let's have some fun!

The Fire Victims in California, How Can I Help? // By Tanya Edwards, RTR Pilates Instructor

Paradise after the fireThe Washington Post (Noah Berger/AP)

The fires in California have devastated entire communities and left thousands of people without homes, without jobs and stranded in the midst of a temporary housing crisis. If you are feeling compelled to help but don’t know where to start, here are a few links you can follow to give help (via financial donations) directly to those that need it most:

I’m initiating this relief effort because my immediate family is directly affected by the fires.

My brother, David (I call him DJ), and sister-in-law, Patty, moved to Paradise in the mid 90’s as newlyweds with their first baby on the way. I can remember teasing him when I came up for my first visit, “Being a newlywed and soon-to-be dad wasn’t enough, you had to move to Paradise too?” He just smiled and laughed. The town of Paradise truly lived up to its name, nestled in Pine Trees and high above the town of Chico with the aptly named “Skyway Drive” as the main road in and out (or up and down, because it’s 1,778 feet above sea level). They spent their first few months living in one of their friends’ family vacation home and eventually moved down to Chico because even though rent is cheap, jobs are hard to come by in Paradise. Commuting up and down Skyway on a daily basis is expensive. My nephew, Aric, was born early that next year at Feather River Hospital in Paradise. I’ll never forget the tiny little onesie they gifted him at the birthing center when he was being discharged… it said, “I was born in Paradise”. Eighteen months later, my niece, Dominique (we call her Nini), was born and another onesie was added to the memory box. The family was complete and DJ was working hard to build his career and hopefully buy a house, always with the thought of Paradise as the goal of where they wanted to settle down and own a home. Their dream was finally realized in 2000 and they bought their first home up Skyway Drive, in Magalia… the town directly above Paradise. It was great to see them so happy and settled! Aric and Nini attended school in Paradise and the family thrived up on the mountain, living the ‘American Dream’.

Nini Graduation

Nini's Graduation

Unfortunately, not all stories have their picture perfect happy ending. My brother passed away quite suddenly and unexpectedly five years ago in 2013, just a few months shy of Aric’s graduation from Paradise High School and one week before Nini was to attend Prom. Our entire family was sent reeling with the loss, Patty and the kids world came to a stand still.  The last five years have been quite a trial with many ups and downs but they managed to get back on their feet to establish a new kind of normal. And then the fire came raging through two weeks ago.

Patty, Aric and Nini are all currently evacuated from their home. They are in a bizarre state of limbo at the moment. As far as we know, thankfully, their house is still standing. We are equally grateful that they made it out safely and have a family friend to stay with in Chico while they wait for further news on the house in Magalia. They all worked in Paradise and unfortunately, their places of employment are among the hundreds of businesses that burnt down. It was surreal to hear their stories of evacuation. Tales of raging fires on both sides of the road, traffic and anxiety building as they drove through the flames. I broke down and cried when I saw the videos on Facebook of other evacuees driving the same roads my family was on. It looked absolutely terrifying!

Tanya 2_copy

Tanya's Family: Nini, Tanya, Tanya's Husband, Aric, Tanya's Son

As horrible as this ordeal might sound, in reality, my family is on the more fortunate side of the thousands of evacuees.  Tens of thousands of people lost their homes AND jobs and are currently displaced… living in shelters, Walmart parking lots or staying temporarily with friends. Its overwhelming to imagine what they are going through and what the road to rebuilding and recovery will entail. Instead of worrying and wondering, I decided to turn my energies toward a positive plan of action.

Let’s DO something productive and help out where it’s needed most!

I’m pleased to announce that RTR Pilates has graciously offered the use of the studios time, energy and resources to hold a fundraiser for the victims of the fires in California. Details are listed below.

My hope is that in this holiday season we can let the victims of this fire know they are not alone.

Thank you, Tanya.

Details from RTR Pilates on HOW TO HELP:

Three ways to help:

  1. 1. ) Attend Tanya’s California Fire Fundraiser Classes on Saturday, December 1st, 2:15, 3:15 PM.
  2. 2.) Bring in Gift Cards to any RTR Pilates location to places like CVS, Walmart, VISA from now until December 15th.
  3. 3.) Donate to one of the following: North Valley Community Foundation, California Community Foundation Wildlife Relief Fund, Sierra Nevada Camp Fire Relief Fund.

On Saturday, December 1, 2018 Tanya will be teaching classes to benefit the victims of the California fires, specifically those affect in and around Paradise, California.  The classes are free to sign-up with donations in the form of check or cash or gift card accepted at the time of the class.

Please make donation checks out to any one of the foundations listed above. Click HERE to sign up for Tanya's class! Space is limited, pre-registration is encouraged.

Thank you in advance for all of your support!

Sunday Fundays are my Favorite: A Day in the Life of an RTR Pilates Instructor // By Lindsey Fair

7:30AM –Wake Up!

Hi RTR Pilates Fans! For those of you that don’t know me, I’m Lindsey Fair (formally known as Lindsey Crane) I started teaching in the Chevy Chase studio almost 5 years ago before I moved to help run our Highlands Ranch Studio in Colorado! I’ve been out in Colorado for almost 2 years now and I am loving every minute of it!

Today is Sunday and I teach the 9:15 & 10:15AM classes so I have the luxury of “sleeping in” a bit and really soaking up my kitty cat cuddles (#crazyproudcatmom). We have two fur babies who sometimes visit our HR studio and help distract clients from their pain and torture. :)

Meet Sweets (top) and Sassy (bottom)! Yes, they look identical but they are not related we rescued them from a local shelter here called The Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue!

8:15AM- Off to the Studio!

The crisp morning air makes my little East coast heart sing!!! Today is the first day that scarfs seem appropriate! I just love scarf weather! One of my favorite things about being a Pilates instructor is the very comfortable work attire! Once I’ve got the Pilates look for the day it’s off to the studio in our handy dandy RTR Fiat!

Coffee is a necessity today and the line for the drive thru at Starbucks on University Blvd. is insane! Little insider tip– when coffee is needed and the drive thru line is going to make you late, sneak over to the King Soopers and grab your coffee from the in-store Starbucks without being late for class! They have everything you need and there is rarely a line.

With my coconut milk pumpkin spiced latte in hand, I’m ready to get the studio ready for classes and our Fall Fashion Event that will be later today after classes conclude!

lindsey coffee

My Sunday Morning ladies came to play today and we got some really good work done. I just love the community we are building out here and the clients are a big happy part of our RTR Pilates family.

11:30AM – Brunching It!

After class it’s back home for brunch and to shower for our Fall Fashion Event. I do my best to eat healthy and I really enjoy cooking clean! Since my husband, Donnie spent the night in Colorado Springs with Friends who are in town visiting, I decided to FaceTime him (isn’t he cute?) while I made and ate my breakfast: one fried egg, one fried egg white, avocado, Whole 30 approved bacon, fruit and some orange juice!

I take local Colorado bee pollen every morning and it has changed my life! In my first summer here in Colorado I had terrible allergies! I had never had allergies before and one of our beloved clients told me that local Colorado bee pollen will help and she was absolutely right! A few pollen pellets a day keeps my allergies away and I’m so grateful.

1:30PM – On the Road Again!

It’s 1:30PM and it’s back to the studio to meet my Lylah Grey friends and help get set up for our event! We had a lot of fun and got our hands on some of the latest fashion items. Everyone pictured below (including our instructor Ashlyn Wilkes wearing the black romper in the center of the bottom picture) has Lylah Grey outfits on and you can order you own via the website: https://www.lylahgrey.com

With our wallets a little lighter and our Fall wardrobe spruced we helped clean up and did a little house keeping of the studio before I headed home around 7:30PM.

8:00PM – Winding Down

Too tired and full of cheese and crackers to cook anything healthy; I snuggled up on the couch to watch the Shape of Water (which is a really good movie) with a bowl of butter parmesan noodles, a glass of red wine, and my hot hubby.

Tomorrow is Monday October 1st – how is it October already? I’ll teach more Pilates classes in the morning and then I’ll spend a few hours at the office working on the KPI reports for the company and will report back to Reina on how all the studios are doing. KPI reports are a little tedious but they give me a new appreciation for our clients and their dedication to our RTR Family! So thank you to all that can call themselves an RTR Pilates person – we LOVE you!

A Day in the Life of an RTR Pilates Instructor

Hi All!

I am SO excited to give you a little glimpse into my life on this rainy Monday. I’m often asked “Why don’t you teach at this studio more?” or “Do you do Pilates ALL the time?” and I thought that maybe this ‘day in the life’ series can give you a better idea of what life is like for an RTR Pilates Instructor and give you answers to those questions. Keep in mind this is not reflective of ALL the instructors at RTR Pilates, we all have families, other obligations, busy lives etc. But here’s a little taste of what a typical day looks like for me!

7:00 AM – Wake Up! ⛅️

I teach at 8:15 & 9:15 in our Potomac Studio on Mondays so I wake up an hour earlier, drink hot water with lemon, check who is signed up for my class and what I may need to modify as I play my favorite tunes (quietly) and get ready for work.

Driving in, coffee in hand, I’m often thinking about what I want to teach, which exercises I haven’t incorporated into my classes lately and what feels fresh and new to me. Now everyone is different I’m in my sixth year of my Pilates career so at this point I kind of go with the flow and don’t plan too much ahead but I do know of many instructors that come with their complete classes written out with notes and all. Which, as the Director of Instructor Development for RTR Pilates I highly recommend all new instructors do!

After finishing my Level 3 class with a brutal ab and inner thigh series it’s time for breakfast and I’m starved!

Screen Shot 2018-09-17 at 9.45.06 PMMe this morning after teaching two classes in Potomac.

10:15 AM – Breakfast ☕️

Today I thought ahead and actually packed my breakfast. Gluten free oats, one apple, protein powder and almond butter. YUM! I prepped this bad boy up and took it to eat at my desk as I began checking emails.

It’s training season which means most of my time in the office consists of checking in with all my trainees and following up with trainers to make sure everyone is up to date and prepped for their training sessions. (If you’re interested in joining our training program this spring simply email me!)

12:30 PM – Snack Time

Pouring my second cup of cold brew grabbing some Greek yogurt and refilling my water bottle as I finish scheduling the studio’s social media for the next two weeks and uploading a post to our Instagram account. Follow us!

IMG_7313The photo I posted to our Instagram account today.

2:15 PM – Torture with Ulrick

We RTR Pilates Instructors love a good butt kicking and I can always count on my friend Ulrick for a tough class. That’s why I signed up for his 2:15 Level 2 Class in Potomac. I’m working in the office anyway; why not take a little break? Lucky for me, both Reina and Monica signed up for class as well so we had a mini RTR Pilates Staff party! Normally I take Ulrick's Level 3 Circuit Class which is a GREAT workout however I'm heading to the gym later and didn't want to overdo it. Taking each other’s classes is a fun way to see fellow instructors, clients whose schedules may not match with yours and it also keeps our team fresh and inspires us with new material for the next time we teach! You get your workout done and research in for work, win-win!

3:30 PM– Lunch

I finished my office work early and didn't plan lunch so out of sheer laziness I headed across the street to the local Starbucks and picked up a Protein Bento Box to eat on my way to the gym.

4:15 – Gym Time

Those who know me closely know that I’m a total gym rat. Of course I LOVE Pilates but gym time is my time. Plus it serves as a space where I can experiment with exercises and see if I can come up with something new I can introduce in class. Mostly, I use my gym workouts to push myself out of my comfort zone, get some mental clarity and exercise my stress away!

It’s Leg Day and if you think I’m brutal with my lunges in class I am just as tough on myself and I absolutely LOVE it. I did plenty of walking lunges, weighted squats, dead lifts and all my favorites that by the end of my 20-minute cardio session I was feeling the burn.

6:00 – Dinner Prep

On the way home from the gym I stopped by the grocery store to pick up some staples: chicken tenderloins, mushrooms, and asparagus. Now it’s time to cook!

7:00 – Dinner w/ my Favorite Netflix Show

Guys, I’ve been REALLY into Dark on Netflix. It’s a German thriller and so, so very interesting. Let me know if you’ve watched it next time I see you in class!

IMG_7319Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner!

8:00 – Shower & Down Time with My Boo

My husband comes home late, earliest is 8:00 PM and we’re both usually so exhausted at this point we continue watching TV together while he eats dinner or I do my own thing while he paints. As a matter of fact, as I type this he’s beside me in his studio working away on a new painting! I'm about to put another episode of Dark on with the cat on my lap and a handful of jelly beans. By this point I usually fall asleep on the couch at around 11-11:30 PM and make my way to bed.

Tomorrow the cycle begins all over again and I’m back in the office at 9:00 AM before teaching three classes in Chevy Chase. By the end of the week I’ll have taught an average of 21 classes between 5 studios in the DC area, seen 144 clients, and have said “neutral spine” upwards of 1000 times. ;)

What does your week look like?!
