Beginners looking into Pilates classes may notice the most popular options of either the mat or the reformer. While a mat is less complex in appearance, a reformer offers greater overall benefits.
The reformer is also very simple to learn. Reformer instructors educate users on the proper way to make the most of the reformer, but it’s also helpful to have an idea of what to expect before you go.
Here are the main things to keep in mind for your first time using a Pilates reformer.
What Is a Reformer?
A reformer is a bench-style machine that has cables, springs, and bars. It is designed to support participants as they perform Pilates exercises, either by increasing or decreasing the intensity, to enhance a workout or scale back if needed. Those who exercise with the added support still get a great workout. Compared to using a mat, reformers offer a greater variety of potential movements and challenges.
Your instructor will carefully guide you through a reformer Pilates class; here’s what you can expect:
The Reformer Isn’t Your Only Tool
Most people assume they will be using the reformer exclusively during their Pilates classes. Indeed, the majority of the time will be spent engaging with the reformer machine, but this often also involves incorporating other tools, such as the magic circle or resistance band, to increase the complexity of the workout or target specific areas.
Which tools are best and how often they’re used will depend on the class goals and level of experience.
It’s Okay to Feel Uncoordinated
Learning to use a reformer is a lot like learning to ride a bike. It can feel clumsy and ungainly at first, but very quickly, it “clicks,” and you won’t really think about it anymore.
You will also notice you are targeting previously under-used muscles in ways that are new to your body. Give yourself some grace to understand that as you practice, you’ll become more used to these movements, and they will come more naturally.
Pilates focuses on being self-reflective; try not to check yourself against the progress of others around you. Your workout is only about you.
You Won’t Stay Still
Because the carriage of the reformer moves while you’re lying on it, some people may find the moving sensations confusing at first.
It’s helpful to remember that you are the one in control; reformers are not electrically powered, so the carriage only moves when you do. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you can always slow down or take a breather.
You Might Need to Adjust the Machine
The springs on a reformer represent various levels of tension, which can increase or decrease the difficulty of exercises and movements.
Throughout your workout, you may need to adjust the springs to suit the current activity. With instructor guidance and a little practice, this task becomes second nature. At RTR Pilates the instructor will always tell you what springs to use for each exercise.
The Class Might Be Smaller
Reformers are larger than Pilates mats, which means they take up more room. If you sign up for a reformer Pilates class, you can expect fewer people than in a more basic class.
This can be a significant advantage that allows you to enjoy more one on one guidance for better form.
You Won’t Wear Shoes, But Socks Matter
Many beginners come into reformer Pilates classes expecting to keep their shoes on, then are surprised when we ask you to remove your shoes.
You’ll see greater flexibility in the ankle and foot area without shoes, but keep your socks in mind. It’s helpful to wear socks with grips or that separate toes allowing you to engage with the reformer machine in the most effective way.
Grip socks can stop your feet from slipping from straps or the foot bar, helping you to focus on getting the most out of your exercise rather than keeping your feet in place.
At RTR Pilates we require the use of grip socks for your safety. We even sell them at every studio!
The best way to understand how quickly you can learn the moves of a reformer is to take a beginner class. With these tips in mind, you will be prepared to show up and Rock the Reformer!
