Pilates classes are a dynamic way to increase full body flexibility and strength, and it’s especially appealing for beginners and advanced practitioners alike.
In addition to the varied levels of intensity, one of the reasons that Pilates is so well-favored is the versatility it offers. Pilates incorporates the use of easy to use tools, such as the magic ring, to expand how a person moves their body.
A magic circle is one such tool that is designed to enhance numerous aspects of your Pilates workout.
Here’s what you need to know to get the most out of your magic circle at RTR Pilates.
What Is a Magic Circle?
The magic circle is an exercise prop that can be used in several Pilates exercises. Also known as a fitness ring or Pilates circle, this tool is a great addition to or alternative for machine-based exercise.
Utilizing the magic circle during exercise provides the potential for varying levels of resistance or support, depending on the goals of the user.
A magic circle is available in a variety of sizes ranging from 12-15 inches in diameter. The most commonly used size is 14 inches, but try multiple types to see which one suits your body shape and needs.
The magic circle is made of a flexible metal or composite that is covered by rubber, plastic, or foam. Rubber rings are a common beginner option to introduce light levels of resistance, while advanced students may upgrade to a steel ring.
Magic circles are usually equipped with two pads or handles that assist in holding onto the circle during exercise.
Why the Magic Circle Is So Versatile
Depending on how it is used, the magic circle can be integrated to add intensity or support during an exercise. When doing planks or press-ups, the magic circle can be used as a supportive tool by placing it under the body parallel to the sternum.
By doing this, the magic circle reduces the impact of your body weight on your muscles, making it easier to perform the exercises.
Alternatively, one way to add intensity to a workout is to incorporate the magic circle while using the Pilates Reformer.
For example, simply squeeze the magic circle between the legs during various exercises and movements to engage more muscles, leading to a higher-level workout.
How to Use the Magic Circle
The magic circle is used to create moderate resistance when the sides are squeezed together. The arms, shoulders, chest, and thighs can be targeted when using the magic circle in different positions.
As with all Pilates movements, proper form, alignment, and breathing should be prioritized when going through exercises.
One exercise that works the upper body is called the halo ring. During this exercise, the magic circle is held above your head with your elbows slightly bent, resembling a halo.
This positioning widens the chest and back. While the magic circle is in this lifted position, squeeze the ring inwards 8-10 times using controlled movements.
The shoulders, upper arms, and core should feel engaged during the squeeze. Don’t forget to breathe! The magic circle can also target the lower body during many Reformer exercises such as bridges or bridges.
While lying supine on the Reformer machine, place your heels on the foot bar so that your knees are bent. Put the magic circle in between your legs so that your thighs are squeezing the pads of the circle.
Then, while squeezing your inner thighs and core, roll up from the Reformer so that your hips and lower back are off of the machine.
Continue raising and dropping your hips, making sure to engage your core, hamstring, and glute muscles at the top of your hip thrusts.
This exercise targets the core, inner and outer thighs, hamstring, and glute muscles. Keep in mind that the head and neck should not feel pulled or uncomfortable at any point throughout this exercise.
These are just a few of the many possibilities that the magic circle can add to your workout routine!
